Biography and CV

b. 1982. Lives and works in London.

Representation:
Joanna Bryant & Julian Page, London
Marshall Contemporary, LA

As well as having been the subject of several solo presentations in the US and the UK, my work has been shown at such institutions as Whitechapel Gallery (London), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, K11 (Shanghai), and Jerwood Space (London). I've been awarded residencies at MASS MoCA and Art Omi and included in Plat(t)form at Fotomuseum Winterthur and Photo50 in London. I was also the first non-documentary photo-based artist to win in the British Journal of Photography’s Awards in 2012. In 2015, I was recorded for Tate Audio Arts archive. In 2021, I will be included in The Stubborn Influence of Painting at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (Colorado) [rescheduled from 2020].

My work is held in several important collections, including the The Hepworth Wakefield / The Tim Sayer Bequest and the Raymond Learsy and Melva Bucksbaum Collection.

In 2014, I qualified under the Exceptional Talent program for non-EU artists working in the UK.

"Ishchuk seems to have discovered the tipping point, beyond which our frame of reference is forced to change." - Loring Knoblauch, Collector Daily

My practice reformulates photography as a vastly expanded experimental field where it can freely commix with other media. It does so through dramatizing the processes and materials of photography, and diverting them away from the indexical pictorial toward perceptual propositions at the threshold of legibility and meaning. In the last few years, the practice has seen a gradual shift from using a photographic print as a site for material interventions and mark-making activities toward broader concerns with surface registration and what can be called ‘demarcation’ – the line as an architectonic compositional device as well as a boundary of material identity and between 2D and 3D space.

Hovering between the handmade, the industrial and the archaeological, the practice also explores how the formal generates affect – or an illusion thereof – and taps into photography's ambivalent relationship with the modernist canon, to which it was instrumental but into which it wasn't properly absorbed. My work aligns with the concept of “contemporary ruin gaze” posited by Svetlana Boym, which is a gaze "reconciled to perspectivism, to conjectural history and spatial discontinuity [and that] requires an acceptance of disharmony, of the contrapunctual relationship of human, historical and natural temporality.”*

*[Svetlana Boym, 'Ruins of the Twentieth Century', in 'Frieze Projects and Frieze Talks 2006-2008']
